Christmas Ornaments, Angels, Glass, Victorian Tree Decorations
A Brief History of Christmas Traditions
Christmas is filled with traditions and events, but how did they start and why do we still do them? Traditions are often passed down throughout generations for centuries, but the origins are often unknown or forgotten.
The decorating of Christmas trees is a popular tradition as seen below.
The Christmas Tree Ornaments
Christmas ornaments are decorations made of glass, metal, wood or ceramics. They are used to
adorn a Christmas tree. Ornaments take many different forms, from a simple round ball to highly artistic designs. Santa Claus is a commonly used figure. Martin Luther, in the 16th century, was walking through the woods late one night. As it was clear, many stars were shining through the branches of the trees giving the impression of twinkling lights. Luther was so inspired by the beauty of the sight that he cut down a small evergreen and brought it home. He recreated the stars by putting candles on the tree's branches.
In 1880, Woolworth's first sold manufactured Christmas tree ornaments, and they caught on very quickly. The first electrically lighted Christmas tree appeared in 1882.
Until the mid 1800’s trees were decorated with edibles such as cookies, chains of popcorn,
berries, raisins, nuts, and pretzels. The tops of trees held flags, angels or stars. By the 19th century toys, bells, garlands and paper decorations were being included as decorations.
Calvin Coolidge in 1923 ceremoniously lit the first outdoor tree at the White House, starting that long tradition.
