Information
and history about Eagles
Eagles are large birds of prey, which are found mainly in the Old World, with only two species (Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle) in North America, a few in South America and two, (White-bellied Sea Eagle and Wedge-tailed Eagle), in Australia.
Like all birds of prey, eagles have very large powerful hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong legs and powerful talons. They also have extremely keen eyesight to enable them to spot potential prey from a distance.
Eagle is the common name for a number of diurnal birds of prey, some of which are the largest members of
their family which also includes kites, hawks, buzzards, and certain vultures. The name eagle is somewhat
loosely applied, as several of the groups are not particularly closely related to one another, and some birds
called hawks are larger than some called eagles. The Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle are two eagles that have several of the same characteristics and have
several different ones as well.
The bald eagle has been our nations bird since 1782. It means
freedom, power and majesty. The bald eagle is a magnificent creature. It has been on our endangered species list over the years. It is sad to think that
there are people who could kill this wonderful bird for there own gain. By the 1930s, people became aware of the diminishing bald eagle population, and in 1940 the Bald Eagle Act was passed. There is no single cause for the decline in the bald eagle population.
Main causes of death to the bald eagle are: Fatal gun shot wounds by careless or
malevolent hunters, electrocution from landing on power poles, lead poisoning
from eating game which were killed by hunters (such as deer and ducks),
collisions with vehicles, starvation (usually in the winter time when food is
scarce), death due to environmental exposure.
