Legends of Alluring Mermaids
Mermaids are legendary female sea creatures portrayed to have the upper body and head
of a woman and the lower half of a fish. (tail) The classic image is that of a
captivating
and beautiful bare breasted mermaid sitting on a rock by the oceans edge and
ready to disappear into the water at a moment's notice. (For children's eyes,
the mermaids have been given a bikini style top)
For thousands of years, seaward men have told tales of beautiful creatures that
inhabit the waters of the world. Most are cheerful stories, however, on occasion, some take
a turn to the dark side. Stories of men being lured by beautiful mermaids into the water for
a undeniable fate of death. Mermaids may seem angelic like, but some legends state that if offended,
a mermaid would cause floods or other disasters. Their gifts brought misfortune and to see one on a
voyage meant an omen of shipwreck.
On the lighter side; did you ever see Disney's "The Little Mermaid"? It's loosely based upon
the story by Hans Christian Andersen. A young teen-aged mermaid wants to know what it's
like to be human. Well, she ends up falling in love with a human and has to go through trials
and tribulations to be with him, including bargaining with an unscrupulous
seahag.
It's a movie for the whole family. (well it is Disney!)
Another good movie to see is "Splash". It was made in 1984 and stars Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah.
It's about a mermaid who saved a boy, Allen, from drowning. They are reunited several years later when he
returns to the same location and manages to fall into the water again. The mermaid once again
rescues Allen but he thinks it's his imagination. Until of course, she hunts him down
in New York disguised as a woman. They fall in love, but what will Allen do when he finds out
she actually a mermaid?
